Rhythms of promise

Started at the end of 2023, this series of watercolor on canvas paintings explores ideas of new beginnings. With this work, I provide a counterpoint of hope to the darkness that hovers in the news. Working intuitively with color to evoke the gentle promise of fresh starts, I distill the ideas into a painted rhythm that is at times timid, and other times bold. Through the intentional use of color and layers, I offer the viewer an opportunity to reflect on simple moments that might easily be overlooked but that hold the promise of hope.

The series is made with watercolor, graphite and cold wax on canvas.

Urban Musings

Inspired by nature and architecture, this series created in 2023 considers their interplay in evoking memories and emotions. I am especially drawn to the interaction of nature with our built environment, juxtaposing the organic with the geometric. Distilling ideas from found moments of unexpected beauty, I combine media – plaster, carving and pastels – to imbue my work with a subtle sense of materiality and allusions to the effects of water and time on our built environment. Reducing form and ideas to their essence, I balance strength with quiet, scale with intimacy, the masculine and the feminine to create moments for contemplation.

The series is made with plaster, carving and pastels on wood panels.

FINDING THE LIGHT

This collection, started in early 2022, is about holding on to hope. It embodies this idea of finding the good even in times that might seem dark. I wanted to continue pushing the linear motif, while using it as a literal passage to find light. The subtle dimension is achieved through a layering of plaster, which is then painted over. The velvety quality of the painting is achieved through the use of acrylic paint and soft pastels.

The series is made with plaster, pastels, acrylics on either canvas or wood panel.

QUIET

In the early Fall of 2021, life was returning to normal, but life wasn’t actually normal. During this time I also read the book “Quiet” by Susan Cain. In the book, Cain argues for the quiet power of introverts, and I began to better understand how to manage my expectations and energy. My Quiet collection draws on the qualities of majestic and serene spaces and invites viewers to slow down their breathing to find their inner quiet power.

The series is made with acrylics, graphite, colored pencils and acrylic media on canvas.

EPHEMERAL SUMMER

For this series, I longed for the feeling of a carefree summer spent at the beach. My paintings for my Ephemeral Summer collection are inspired by memories that brought me to that state of being. I traveled in time and space in my mind and pulled from it memories, which I distilled into a visual experience. With my work, I wanted to evoke essential feelings so that viewers can access their own memories of carefree summers.

The series is made with watercolors, graphite on canvas or paper mounted on wood cradle, and finished with cold wax.

PHASES

This series began in 2020 and was completed in early 2021. It was inspired by chaos and darkness of this unprecedented year. The pandemic, the economic crisis, to the wildfires and the social unrest forced many of us to reexamine the world and what really matters in life, and attempt to to find inner balance within the turmoil. This multimedia collection on wood panels is an exercise in restraint, using subtle layering of materials to provide depth, while celebrating clean lines and simple forms. Each piece gives you the opportunity for a visual pause to explore feelings of light or dark.

The series is made with acrylics, charcoal, paper and plaster on canvas or wood panel.

MEDITATIONS

This body of work from 2019 began one silent morning after a very challenging few months. I wanted the world around me to make more sense. Patterns and grids provided me a sense of order and control, while evoking a story. The negative space, the repetition, the overlap, the weight of the line and saturation all contribute to the emotion. However, as in life, when looking at each work as a whole the actual tension of each line is dissipated, giving way to overall harmony and balance. The world is expressed through seemingly simple lines, yet each tells a very different story. A good reminder that simplicity can be rich in detail, and that when you take a moment to pull back you can see the whole picture.

The series is made with watercolors and graphite on paper.
